Ages 13–19

Did you know that physical activity can improve mental health? Studies have shown that regular physical activity can be as effective as medication or cognitive therapy for improving mental health and effectively treating depression and anxiety.

The YMCA, in partnership with organizations across BC, has developed Mind Fit: a physical and mental wellness program for teens aged 13–19 experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of depression and/or anxiety in BC. The program is designed to support teens in learning how to incorporate physical activity into their mental wellness plan.

During this 8-week program, a group of 10–12 teens meet to discuss healthy coping strategies and try new physical activities.

In the first hour, a mental health clinician leads the group in sharing and learning from one another. Together they set achievable exercise goals; examine barriers that might prevent sustained participation in regular physical activity, and discuss tools and strategies to help make getting active easier and more fun. 

The second hour is led by the physical activity specialist from the YMCA and the group tries out new games, sports, and fitness classes each week—both indoors and outdoors. Mind Fit is fun, active and engaging!

  • Learn from experienced professionals how to manage mental health in a safe environment

  • All fitness levels welcome
