  • Parents only need to register their child once for a time slot that continues until they choose to withdraw, eliminating the need to re-register for different levels or seasons.
  • Children progress through levels at their own pace within the same time slot.
  • Lessons run the same year round and are broken down by:
  • At the end of every season, children are automatically moved into the next appropriate level.
  • On the first day of the season, we ask that parents double check that their child has been placed in the correct level.

  • Parents will need to know their child’s current level in order to register in the suitable lesson.
  • Children who have not participated in a YMCA swim lesson within the past one-year period must complete an assessment to determine their suitable level. Call the aquatics department at 250-491-9622 ext. 204 or 226 for a verbal assessment or come into the facility free of charge for a physical assessment. (Monday–Thursday before 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays after 12 p.m.)
  • Call or visit member services to register. You will have to purchase a child membership if you don't have one already. You can then select your time slot. If there is no time slot that works for you available, you can be put on a waitlist.
  • Aquatics staff will assign participants to the appropriate instructor in their chosen slot.

  • Families with several children can all participate at the same time.
  • Children learn and progress at their own pace free from the pressure of completing levels within a structured time frame.
  • Lessons provide continuous feedback and promote relationship building between the instructor, child and family.
  • Parents can conveniently change the time/day of lessons at any point depending on availability.
  • This lesson model is used throughout YMCA’s across Canada due to its effectiveness and convenience.
  • Swim lessons are included with a child membership at no additional cost.

  • Children stay with the same instructor for a full season. Once they complete a level they will begin to work on swimming skills in the next level and remain with their current instructor until the end of the season.
  • At the end of every season, children are automatically moved into the next appropriate level.
  • On the first day of the season, we ask that parents double check that their child has been placed in the correct level.
  • If a child turns 3 or 6 years old, we encourage them to stay in the current level they are registered in and they will get moved when the next season begins.

  • Children will stay with one constant instructor for a full season, however there are times when another instructor is required to teach.
  • Seasonal instructors allow children to complete levels more quickly with consistent attendance, and help with children who respond differently to various personalities and teaching styles.
  • We are unable to accommodate instructor requests due to availability.
  • A supervisor will consistently be on deck during lessons to answer any questions or concerns.

Our lessons utilize volunteers who provide leadership and mentorship to children. YMCA lesson volunteers wear black and white labelled rash guards. Many of our volunteers are current students in lifeguarding courses, or are interested in becoming lifeguards.

If a child will be absent and the parent would like to hold their spot, they will need to call or email with the child’s full name, level, instructor, lesson time and day. Any child that is absent for more than four weeks in a row with no excused absence will be removed from the program.

  • Children over 10 years of age are allowed in the facility without an adult.
  • Children 8–10 years old must have an adult (16+) in the building with them at all times. If parents would like to join a fitness class or visit the fitness centre they are asked to advise the child’s instructor so they can be reached in case of an emergency.
  • Children under 8 years old must have a parent within arm’s reach in the pool with them at all times.
  • Parents are encouraged to attend family days
    • Halfway through the season we will have a family day where instructors show children’s individual progress and answer questions.
    • It is important parents are able to attend to ensure they are fully informed of their child’s progress.

  • Due to the popularity of our continuous swim lessons, there is no public swimming available during lesson times.
  • Swim lessons are included with a child membership.
  • If financial barriers are standing in the way of a child’s participation, they may qualify for an assisted membership. The YMCA of Okanagan is a charity that is able to offer financial assistance thanks to generous donors.

If you put your child's membership on hold, they will be withdrawn from lessons to allow others the opportunity to participate. No spaces are held due to the popularity of the program. If your child is not yet old enough to start a level we cannot register your child for that level until their corresponding birthday.
