Kids get active at YMCA of Okanagan Healthy Kids Day

Most families struggle to ensure their children reach the recommended daily activity levels. Brandi Isagawa has found that prioritizing activity for her three boys (all under the age of five) equates to not only increased health, but better behavior.

“I believe any child that’s actually burned off energy at any point in the day is an easier child later,” she states. “The link between exercise and behavior in children is remarkable.”

As a busy stay at home mom, Brandi finds both physical activity and social interaction for herself and her three sons by using many of the programs and services available through their family membership at the Kelowna Family Y.

“The Y is a fantastic outlet for them, they get to see other kids, interact, play and run. I know that when I take them home, they are going to relax.”

Brandi’s sons (four-year-old twins Lincoln and Milo, and one-year old Hiro), participate in a variety of programs such as child minding, swim lessons, active arts, parent and tot play time and more. Brandi has found they are able to get the exercise, socialization and stimulation they need while giving her some well-deserved time off.

Brandi’s “me-time” is spent working out and socializing with the other members with whom she has made close friends. Being a stay at home mom can be isolating and Brandi credits her time at the Y as a way for her to connect with her community while improving her physical fitness.

“My time at the Y has made me a healthier and happier mother which has benefited my entire family and importantly, has allowed me to role model a healthy lifestyle for my boys.”

Raising healthy and active children can be challenging, but Brandi proves that making activity a priority for herself and her sons has a positive effect on both their health and behavior.

If you are looking to become more active as a family, YMCA Healthy Kids Day is a free community event that brings families together to engage in fun, active play. Taking place Sunday May 5 from 12-4 p.m. outside the Kelowna Family Y, the event will include a healthy barbecue, entertainment stage, prizes and over 50 activities for all ages.

Kids play and have fun. Parents connect with healthy resources. Community becomes stronger.
