YMCA of Okanagans Cycle for Strong Kids fundraises $91,000 for the community

Hundreds of local vulnerable children will be able to access healthy Y programs all because an incredible $91,000 was raised at the YMCA of Okanagan’s largest fundraiser of the year. Nearly 350 cyclists attended Cycle for Strong Kids on Sunday May 26, fundraising for an important cause and participating in a fun outdoor cycle class.

“We are blown away by the generosity of our community,” exclaims Rhonda Zakala, VP of Marketing & Fund Development for the YMCA of Okanagan. “The riders all had a blast at the event, but it pales in comparison to how much fun they’ve gifted back to local kids, granting them access to summer camps, after school programs, basketball, swim lessons and so many other vital programs many parents can’t afford on their own.”

With 1 in 5 children in the Central Okanagan living in poverty, many families are unable to enroll their kids in everyday activities most take for granted. Having equal access to character and strength building programs are vital to bridge the poverty gap these children have no control over.

The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign allows the YMCA to offer financial assistance on child care, pre school, spring and summer camps, swim lessons, health memberships, and recreational and sport programs. These donations also allow the Y to offer select community initiatives completely free, including employment, young parent and mental wellness program for vulnerable youth; and an afterschool enrichment program for high risk children.

Many generous donors, fundraisers, volunteers, supporter and sponsors contributed to the events success, including presenting sponsors Fresh Air and Delcourt Advisory Group at Scotia Wealth Management
